Police have identified the man who opened fire at a downtown Louisville bank Monday morning as 23-year-old Connor Sturgeon.
Sturgeon was killed in a shootout with police, investigators said.
Sturgeon was an employee of the Old National Bank, police said.
When Louisville police arrived, the Old National Bank was still firing and had exchanged fire with Sturgeon. Investigators said Sturgeon was armed with a rifle.
Sturgeon’s motives are still under investigation, police said.
Sturgeon live-streamed some of the shootings on social media, said Interim Louisville Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel.
At least two police officers were killed in the exchange of fire, according to police. One officer was shot in the head and required surgery. The officer’s condition is critical.
At least four other victims were confirmed dead in the community, police said. Nine others were taken to hospital for treatment.
How did the shooter die?
Police said they “stopped” the shooter, but did not say the officer’s bullet killed him. In many mass shootings, the attacker kills himself during a standoff with police.
“The suspect shot the officer. We then fired back and stopped the threat,” Louisville Metro Interim Police Chief Jacqueline Gwynvilarroll said. “The suspect is dead.”
What weapon was the shooter carrying?
Sturgeon attacked the bank at gunpoint, authorities said. You didn’t specify what type.
What does the bank have to do with it?
In an emotional news conference, Gov. Andy Beshear said he knew many of the people who worked at the bank building when he ran for attorney general in 2015.
“I know almost everyone in there. This is my bench,” Beshear said, tearing up. “That’s bad. I have a very close friend who didn’t make it today. I have another good friend who didn’t make it. There’s another guy in the hospital and I hope he makes it through.”
